The turn of seasons is upon us, and so is the body’s natural clock to start desiring warming, nurturing and grounding foods. As the leaves begin to fall, I have the pleasure of watching the array of leaves start to change form into deep oranges, reds and yellows. As I observed a tree within its changing process recently, I was reminded of myself, within my own formation of change at current. Shedding my own leaves, letting my own stories fall off of me. As Autumn approaches, I gather my own resources to get me through an approaching winter.
I have had issues in the past few years with an over indulgence in Cacao, Coffee and playing with other stimulating superfoods and in turn went in to an adrenal breakdown. My kidneys and poor adrenals couldn’t take all those crazy experiments anymore! On this quest, I started searching for a drink that I could make that would nourish me and help correct my adrenal damage.. fast!
In that quest I found my favourite drink on the planet. Good, old (and I mean ancient here) Golden Milk! Golden Milk warms my bones and my heart, I imagine it igniting all my cells when I drink it. I have been pumping myself full of Golden Milk for the last few years and so far I have found it to be the most incredible and life changing part of my daily routine yet. The warmth that fills my body after ingesting this spicy yet sweet beverage is incredible - you can literally feel the turmeric rejuvenating the cells of your body within minutes. Perfect for the approaching colder months and to get the system ready for the season of change.
Golden Milk is an amazing and ancient adrenal healer, used traditionally in India to help restore the Oja's. The Black Pepper is the activator of the Turmeric’s properties, drawing out its healing properties.
I have altered the recipe of traditional Golden Milk to make it even stronger on the healing of the adrenals. The incorporation of herbs like Ashwaganda, Astragalus and Shatavari, along with Medicinal Mushrooms helps stabilise the kidneys and adrenals for greater strength. You can buy whole packets of these herbs that go a long way and last for ages, as you only really need a teaspoon per serving. My good friends down in TeElixir have an array of incredible mushrooms, thoroughly sourced and well priced!
My final naughty-but-nice add in, is a spoonful of coconut oil or organic ghee. I love how it gathers on the top and seems to ease the drink through the bodies system - kind of like how the bulletproof coffee was created!
If you want to really develop your nervous system or anything related to your immunity and adrenals, this is an amazing drink to add to your diet. For a real rejuvenation drink it as many nights a week you can before bed and let its healing properties sink into your body and nourish you as you sleep.
1 teaspoon ground, organic Turmeric
1 knob of fresh, organic Turmeric
1 knob of fresh, organic Ginger
1 teaspoon of Ginger powder (if wanted spicy)
1 teaspoon Cinnamon
1 teaspoon Cardamon
1 pinch of Vanilla
1 pinch of Black Pepper
Your preferred milk (I use Coconut Milk or Organic Cows Milk as I find these hold the ingredients easier.. however your choice of milk is up to you!)
Half cup of fresh water
1 teaspoon of Ashwaganda
1 teaspoon of Shatavari
1 teaspoon of Astragalus
1 teaspoon of Medicinal Mushrooms (Reishi, Chaga, Lions Mane etc)
Sweetener of choice (healthiest options in article here)
1 teaspoon of Coconut Oil/Organic Ghee
1 pinch of Saffron
- Grind in mortar and pestle or blender, your fresh ginger, turmeric and black pepper until wet and combined
- Heat Milk and water in saucepan until hot
- Put in fresh ginger, turmeric and pepper mix along with powdered ginger, cinnamon, vanilla
- Allow your milk to begin boiling and then turn heat down to simmer for 5 minutes
- Pour drink into cup and add your sweetener. along with teaspoons of extras as you desire
- Enjoy at night or in the morning!
